What is MosaLingua and how does it work?

MosaLingua (mosalingua.com) is an e-learning platform dedicated entirely to language learning. 

The idea is that anyone with a computer or phone can learn one of their 8 languages from anywhere.

MosaLingua has carefully selected 30 language teachers and provides you with a set of learning tools that are carefully curated for each level.

By joining MosaLingua, you will connect with over 7 million users and an extensive active community on social media.

What is the MosaLearning® method?

The MosaLearning® method is based on 5 cognitive science and psychology concepts:

• Spaced Repetition System — to commit the information to your long-term memory, you need to space out your review sessions
• Active Recall — to learn something, you need to be able to extract it easily from your memory, without assistance or a clue
• Metacognition — this is the act of reflecting on your thoughts
• Pareto Principle — you should concentrate on the most frequently used words and you’ll make spectacular progress
• Learner Motivation and Psychology — in-person support via email to personalize your learning method

Together, these 5 concepts form the MosaLearning® method (Motivating Optimized System for Adaptive Learning) created by MosaLingua. 

How does MosaLingua work?

You can choose from 5 different programs according to your needs (check the latest prices for each program here).

Courses are self-paced, so you can complete them in your own time. You can view them on the go, on your computer, mobile, or tablet. Plus, you can track your progress, create your flashcards, and even chat with a tutor.

With MosaLingua, you either pay a monthly or yearly subscription which gives you unlimited access to a library of content for your chosen language.

I decided to try MosaLingua Premium as it’s the first option they provide on their website. It was made for all levels, and I chose to learn Spanish.

The Spanish course consists of 19 levels and each has a set of flashcards, dialogues and audiobooks. The number of flashcards will vary. For example, Level 0 (basic) has 25 flashcards while Level 9 (medium) has 897. 

Each course is typically made by a set of flashcards where you practice using your auditory and visual memory while you record yourself repeating the word or phrase. There are no quizzes or exams. 

Also, the MosaLearning® Method is used each time you start to learn a set of flashcards and the app will let you know when to stop to avoid memory saturation.

Overall, MosaLingua works with a set of flashcards, dialogues, and audiobooks. You will not have any tests or exercises for each flashcard level.

What a lesson is like

A typical Spanish lesson (and I’m assuming other languages are the same) will start with some flashcards.

You first look at the flashcard which will have an image and accompanying audio with Spanish pronunciation.  Then, you have to record yourself repeating the word.

Fortunately, you can record and repeat as many times as you need! However, you will not receive any phonetic explanation, which can come in handy for languages that have a different pronunciation for the same word.

Once you have finalized the flashcards, MosaLingua will generate your learning statistics to give you an idea of your learning speed.

You are then invited to use the Dialogues and the Hands-Free section by choosing the dialogue and words you want to practice.  

There is a great selection of audiobooks, videos, and music, which are divided according to your level and interests. Some audio and videos can only be unlocked once you have learned specific flashcards.

You can also navigate through their additional resources tab, which will guide you through an extensive variety of free newspapers, magazines, music, and cinema.

During my one-week experience, I was able to practice the vocabulary I learned on the flashcards, my reading comprehension, and my pronunciation. After a week, I was able to track my progress, the number of flashcards that I had memorized, and new reading and listening material had been unlocked. 

Pros of MosaLingua

MosaLingua offers an integrated platform with lots of levels filled with flashcards, audio pronunciation, and reading materials. The MosaLearning® method is visible and consistent through the levels and strengthens your memory as you navigate throughout their platform.

Here’s my take on specific positive aspects of MosaLingua;

MosaLingua incorporates all of the elements of language such as vocabulary, speaking, listening, grammar, reading, and writing

MosaLingua provides a comprehensive system for you to learn all the critical elements of a language such as vocabulary, speaking, listening, grammar, reading, and writing.

This means MosaLingua has everything you need to learn a language (whereas other apps may only focus on one or two of these elements.)

Overall this is an important factor to consider if you want to become proficient in languages and is definitely a strength of this platform

MosaLingua Uses MosaLearning®, a scientifically researched method that optimizes memory

While all language learning tools are based on a pedagogical method, MosaLingua does a great job explaining why and how their method works.

As you go through any language level, you can see that they really focus on memory optimization. The flashcards and the dialogues both follow the idea that you should first listen to each word or phrase in the native language and then progress with visuals and writing exercises. 

The fact that the MosaLearning® method is consistent throughout the courses shows that MosaLingua is a serious language learning app.

The amount of content is impressive

MosaLingua has a very extensive selection of audiobooks, videos, and even music. You won’t have to go on other platforms and search for “music in Spanish” or google “audiobooks in Spanish for beginners”. MosaLingua has already curated content within its platform.

They have gathered an extensive library of additional online resources divided into: news; magazines, blogs, and websites; music & cinema; art & culture, and health & daily life.

This means that you will always be able to practice with different materials according to your goals and your level.

MosaLingua has an active community of teachers.

First, the teachers at MosaLingua are very active on the blog and social networks. This is very unique to MosaLingua as you can chat with a teacher who can help you and support your entire learning.

In fact, they will be able to guide you through the MosaLingua content or they will help you find the content or resources you are looking for. 

Overall, this is a very important tool for all language learners at any level and it shows that compared to other apps, MosaLingua wants to ensure a “human aspect” to language learning.

Cons of MosaLingua’s Spanish course

Don’t get me wrong, MosaLingua has an impressive platform, live teachers, and a lot of content to keep you learning. 

However, I did think it could improve on certain aspects.

The platform may look and feel a bit outdated and navigation is not always as intuitive as I’d like it to be

The platform could use a touch of attractiveness. It lacks a visible structure of learning, and the platform is not very user-friendly. Unfortunately, MosaLingua does not provide a navigation tutorial that could come in handy for first-time users.

Moreover, while MosaLingua has an impressive amount of content, they could work on the quality of their audio, their visuals, and their overall user experience.

Overall,  this aspect does not affect the quality of the teaching, only the user experience. So, if this is not something that bothers you, then you will not think of it as a limitation to MosaLingua.

You need to pay for additional resources

There are no exams to work on besides the flashcards and the audiobooks. While some people like to learn independently, a set of exams could be helpful for those who want to take it up a notch.

If you add the MosaSeries, MosaSpeak, and MosaTraining packs, it could set you back around $200 or more.

So you need to consider a basic price of $59 per year plus some one time add-ons if you want to work more on specific skills. But you can already learn plenty with the basic subscription. 

It depends on your level of commitment;  language textbooks or exercise books are not cheap either.

Who is MosaLingua for?

The MosaLingua Spanish course is for someone who is:

• Wanting to learn Latin American Spanish (pronunciation)
• Keen to learn by using flashcards and audio repetition
• Eager to advance and finish the 19 levels
• Open to optional content and willing to pay for it

The MosaLingua app is for someone who is more of an independent learner as its structure will not guide you through your Spanish course. Besides the flashcards, you will have to choose your material, and few exercises are provided as you go along.

 How much does MosaLingua cost?

Pricing depends on the progam you choose. The ideal way to start is to start with MosaLingua Premium:

• MosaLingua Premium (free trial, then a yearly subscription for $59.90/year (which works out to just $4.99/month)

Then there are a number of add on training packages that you can buy:

• MosaSeries ($9.98/month (just $58.80 for a 6-month subscription after your 15-day FREE trial)
• MosaSpeak ( $99.00 for an 8 module course)
• MosaTraining (PREMIUM package: $130.00

Or you can purchase a DELUXE+MOSAWEB package which is $330.00 for an all-inclusive training program

But for the majority of people, the premium subscription will be sufficient and the add ons are there if you really want to take things to a higher level.

Overall, MosaLingua is considered mid-priced compared to other language learning apps online. But then again, it’s still very cheap considering learning a language is a lifelong skill!

MosaLingua Alternatives

If you feel MosaLingua is not the app for you, there are lots of alternatives that could work for you.

Here’s my take on other popular alternatives:

MosaLingua vs Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is a very popular application for language learning that has been in the market for 25+ years.

They have 25 languages to choose from which is quite impressive. However, Rosetta Stone is more expensive than MosaLingua, so that’s something you may want to consider.

Their interface is very user-friendly, and the learning format is very structured which means there are specific milestones to achieve as well as exams to be passed.

The average price per year is $95.88 (or $7.99 per month) but you can also buy a lifetime membership for all languages for one payment of $179.

MosaLingua vs Babbel

Babbel is another popular application for language learning.

Their interface is also user-friendly and the learning process is very guided as you can see the entire level structure as you go.

Compared to MosaLingua, Babbel is more interactive and has a semi-formal structure (a mix between structured courses and games).

The prices vary according to your needs. Monthly access will cost $12.95/month or $155/year, and a yearly subscription will cost $6.95/month or $83.40/year.

MosaLingua vs Mondly

Mondly is an incredibly popular platform that has over 70 million users.

Lessons are comprehensive and immensely fun and I found it a really effective way to learn. I was very impressed by how easy it was to use and how fast I was able to introduce myself in a new language.

It has a user friendly, polished interface with a gamified feel. It also offers a unique augmented reality experience and interactive chatbot conversations

Access to 1 language $9.99 for a month or $47.99 for a year. Access to all 33 languages for a year costs $479.99/year. However, at the time of writing you could get a limited time offer of $47.99, which ends up being $4.99/month

MosaLingua vs Duolingo

Duolingo is the last alternative on my list. It’s also a very popular app that uses game experiences to guide you on your learning. It is very aesthetic and offers a points system, which is very attractive to younger audiences.

Compared to MosaLingua, Duolingo has a younger interface and feel to it. But, it focuses solely on words and phrases and does not provide any audio, dialogues, or a Hands-Free section.

All the courses provided by Duolingo are free but once you have lost a certain number of ‘lives’ (through making errors) you are locked out. You can pay $6.99/month or $83.33/year to have no ads and unlimited lives which will let you learn as much as you want.

Other language platforms we’ve reviewed include:

• Busuu
• Pimsleur
• FluentU
• and Lingoda, Preply and italki, which all have live online instruction with native speakers

How I reviewed MosaLingua

I tested MosaLingua’s Spanish course and decided to try out levels 0 and 1 for a week. I spent one hour per day and managed to do a total of 48 flashcards. I had to choose my reading and audio material to add to the daily flashcards.

I did have a little Spanish knowledge so leveling up was easy but memorizing so many flashcards was a real challenge. 

Here are some of my thoughts:

The Flashcards

The flashcards are the core tool of MosaLingua and are a mix of single words and basic phrases. 

How it works: 

• You’ll first hear the word by itself
• Next, you’ll hear the word and see it written
• Then, you need to repeat the word yourself and record it before moving on

This structure might seem monotonous but it’s a trusted method that allows you to pace your learning curve. Plus, there will always be an element of repetition when it comes to learning a language!

The whole point of this method is a specific order of language assimilation; listen and repeat, memorize, write, and evaluate all three at the same time.

The Dialogues

The dialogues are not automatically presented to you and you need to choose them according to your needs. You have the option of listening to native speakers read, adding Spanish or English subtitles, and learning all the words with the flashcard method. 

How it works: 

• You choose the reading of your choice and listen to the audio-only
• Then, you listen to the audio again but with Spanish subtitles
• Once you have done this, you finally get English subtitles
• At the end of this section, you will be able to learn from new flashcards. 

This structure is fun and interesting because it avoids the use of a direct translation on your first try. Instead, it immerses you in the language (even if you don’t understand it all) and gives you a stress-free learning environment.

Hands-Free

The Hands-Free section is extremely interesting as you can use it whilst on the move. 

How it works: 

• You will see a word in English followed by the audio in English
• You will then have 1-2 seconds to think about the Spanish translation
• Once this time has passed, you will hear the word in Spanish followed by its written translation

This exercise is ongoing and you only need to press play once to enjoy 50 random flashcards available on your level.

Web Platform

There’s no denying that the platform does look a bit dated and that the navigation isn’t as intuitive as I’d like it to be. It’s also missing some of the gamified elements in many other language apps.

However, once you get the hang of it, you can easily navigate it and use it to your advantage.

Features of MosaLingua

The features of MosaLingua on both the app and the web are not as structured or as aesthetic as the competition.

The navigation is not easy to follow, and you might need to click around to find content or learning options. 

There are no gamified elements, no downloads and when you click on some audio or video content it doesn’t open in another tab, so you lose your current MosaLingua tab.

Their community is made of Facebook (93k followers) and they post every 2 weeks, Instagram (17k followers), Twitter (13k followers), and Youtube (163k followers).

Overall, MosaLingua has a basic interface that may seem a little dated, mainly its user interface and content.

What others have said

I Googled MosaLingua Reddit to get a general sense of what other people thought.

Some users have pointed out that it’s hard to keep track of how many words you have learned in a day, so you need to keep track of what you have previously learned. Plus, there seem to be some typos in certain Flashcards.

The most positive aspect of MosaLingua’s method is its emphasis on native audio. This means that every word or phrase that is first introduced to you via audio BEFORE you see it written out. This aspect seems to be very popular among people as it lets you listen and repeat before writing it.

Also, the Hands-Free option is very popular for those who want to keep learning on the road.

The overall feeling was very positive, and many users agreed that MosaLingua was the best supplemental app out there.

For the most part, I agree with these comments, but I do feel like they’ve left aside the user-friendliness of MosaLingua’s interface.

“Basically, MosaLingua is a SRS-System designed to help you learn new words and phrases everyday via flashcards”

“Lists of sentences based on type of grammar. If you pay for the bonus packs you get access features that are golden..I really like being able to target my weaknesses and memorize example sentences that use more complex grammar and take me out of my comfort zone ”

“MosaLingua Spanish is the best supplemental app I’ve yet to find... I really believe it deserves the recognition that some other learning apps have received.”

Overall, users seem to be very happy with the experience with MosaLingua. They appreciate the MosaLearning® method and are willing to pay for extra packs.

Conclusion: is MosaLingua worth it?

In a word: yes.

MosaLingua is best suited for independent learners that like to learn at their own pace. It’s less structured compared to learning a language at school, but it does have what you need to be able to effectively learn a language.

And while the platform itself looks fairly old school, the key thing you want is something that can teach you what you’re looking to learn.

The MosaLearning® system is backed by scientific research and the platform focuses on all the elements you need to master a language. 

The Hands-Free element and the massive library of content make it worth the investment for me.

And as mentioned, since they have a refund policy, the risk of you losing out is minimal.
