What are the advantages of taking an online social media marketing course?

  • Invest in a future career – whether you are considering becoming a full-time social media marketer, influencer, or part-time blogger, an online social media marketing course can provide guidance on the skills you need and how to improve them. Many courses teach transferable skills such as video editing and data analysis which can be used in other careers as well.
  • It’s cost-effective – whilst you can do a degree in marketing, digital marketing, or social media marketing – they are 3-year courses that will set you back at tens of thousands of dollars. Online courses are considerably cheaper and can be completed anywhere with flexible deadlines. They can also serve as a taster before launching into a full degree.
  • Achieve your social media and career goals – personal branding is an essential skill when searching for a job as it’s the best way to tell your future employer who you are and signal that you are the right person for the job. Additionally, 55% of employers who use social media screening have found content that caused them not to hire a candidate. Taking an online course will help you share authentic content that showcases your assets whilst being workplace appropriate.

Buyer’s guide: what to look out for?

The topics covered – there is no shortage of social media platforms and each one has a different audience. If you are looking to post on a specific platform or attract a certain audience, make sure the syllabus is suitable for you.

The instructor qualifications – professors and employees of marketing, PR or graphic design firms are ideal for up to date and high-quality content. However, the expertise of popular and active social media users such as content creators are great for applying the skills as they often explain using examples from their own profiles.

The additional resources – some courses on this list include workbooks, glossaries, and downloadable PDF templates so you don’t have to make your own. Look out for these as you can refer to them and refresh your memory instead of retaking the course.

Coursera Specialisations start at $43.99/month; therefore, the cost depends on the time you take to complete the course. Some videos can be skipped if they’re not suited to your interests, reducing the time needed to complete the specialization.

MasterClass subscriptions start from $180/year. Kris Jenner’s class is the only one relevant to personal branding. However, the subscription includes access to 180+ high quality courses with global icons such as Gordon Ramsay, Mariah Carey, Bog Iger and James Cameron
