The Blueaquaedu project began in September 2025 as one of the Blue Careers projects supported by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (Emfaf). With 8 partners from 3 European countries, the project explores gamification as a educational approach To motivate adolescents and students over 18 years of age to find out more about aquaculture, the post-harvest value chain and the valuation of by-products.
The project aims to improve different types of skills for the next generation: digital, green, gentle, transversal, interdisciplinary, managerial, entrepreneurial and project management.
It brings together industry, educational establishments and public authorities to fill the existing gap and stimulate collaboration between services. It increases the educational offer and encourages young people to pursue a blue career in the aquaculture sector, emphasizing circularity and sustainability.
Many tools, one objective: to attract young people to sustainable aquaculture
The key activities of the Blueaquaedu project to attract young people to aquaculture are several:
- Develop a gamification application For durable aquaculture, focused on five species of fish. The objective of the game is to transform a park to the non -friendly swimming pool into a most managed solution in a sustainable way, with the lowest environmental impact.
- Develop five Current training programs For aquaculture around the themes of cage breeding, hatching, recirculation of aquaculture systems, the post-harvest value chain, the valorization of treatment by-products. To this end, the project has mapped 234 Aquaculture education establishments in 18 EU countries and 5 most external regions.
- Jerk trainers and mentors With practical experience in the selected sectors that can support undergraduate and third cycle students thanks to a combination of training, advice and certification activities.
- Establish a Aquaculture virtual educational network (called “v-aquaedun”) which will extend beyond Europe and its most outside regions, to countries not of the EU, including Africa.
- Develop a Blueaquaedu Online learning platform for mentorship and to accommodate training equipment and Modules.
- Organize Workshops, summer schools and learning In Greece, France and Portugal.
The Blueaquaedu project supports important EU policies such as the Of the Green UE agreement,, Fork farm strategy,, Zero pollution action plan,, Water frame directive,, Maritime Strategy Directive,, Circular economy action plan and the Strategic impact assessment directive.
Waste as a precious resource and an engine of innovation
The circularity and valuation of the by-products of the aquaculture processes are at the heart of the project. Education is the first step towards a sustainable future.
Blueaquaedu gives life to the circular economy by showing How waste can become an engine of innovation By offering learners innovative tools to transform challenges into new opportunities for a sustainable future.
Professor Helen Miliou, coordinator of Blueaquaedu and vice-rector of the Agricultural University of Athens, said:
“”At Blueaquaedu, we are proud to transform the education of sustainable development into an interactive journey. Thanks to our serious game, an online learning platform and future workshops and summer schools, we allow learners to see waste not as a problem but as a precious resource in a prosperous circular economy.
We are shaping a new generation of innovators ready to meet environmental challenges and unlock the potential of circular economy solutions, transforming waste into a better world for a better world. “”
