The new UTEP arts mastery with an artificial intelligence concentration was led by Olga Kosheleva, PH.D., president and associate professor of teaching mathematics at UTEP.

This first degree of its kind – the Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in AI – was led by Olga Kosheleva, Ph.D., President and Associate Professor of Mathematics Teaching at UTEP.

“AI is an integral part of how we interact with technology and this extends to the class,” Kosheleva said. “The teaching of educators to use practical AI will make more effective, the reduction in the time necessary to create course plans to create more robust means to assess the progress of students. The greatest value, however, will be the increased time that the AI will give teachers to focus on work individually with students and forge personal relationships that will support academic growth. ”

The diploma will offer students skills in educational design, data sciences and systemic thinking. The courses include “the foundations of generative AI”, “ethics, culture and society in the AI era” and “data science for education professionals”.

Kosheleva, mathematician and director of the STEM education division at UTEP, whose research on AI was presented around the world, conducted the creation of the diploma after seeing the success of the UTEP Department of Computer Science in the creation of a first cycle program in AI.

“The ability to take advantage of AI is in great demand in the region and the country and this diploma meets this need,” said Clifton Tanabe, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education. “This mastery reflects the mission of the UTEP to transform the life of its graduates and our community. In addition to being at the forefront of IA engineers' production, UTEP will also be a leader in teaching and learning effective AI in education. ”

The new master's degree is a fully online program that can be completed in 16 months. A GRE is not required to be taken into account for admission, and the program is open to any student with a baccalaureate.

Students will be prepared for careers as program developers, school administrators, education coordinators and political analysts, among others.
