The ATD manual for the measure, evaluation and training was published in June, and I was excited when my copy arrived in Australia last week. It is really a fantastic resource, especially in Patti Phillips for its exceptional work in the edition and reception of a group of so talented experts. I am delighted to have been involved.
Here are some of my best highlights of the manual so far. I have not yet finished reading the whole book, so apologies if I miss something important!
AI generative in the evaluation by Trish UHL
The chapter of Trishul (page 387) is a practical case study on the use of generative AI to the extent and evaluation. Updated until the publication, it covers:
– The latest research and statistics on generative AI
– Building literacy and decision -making skills
– Embred curiosity and experimentation
– Use of ethical and responsible AI by clearly emphasizing confidentiality and data
– Choose the right AI tools and effectively view the data
This chapter is full of practical ideas and resources for anyone interested in integrating AI into their evaluation work.
Design learning surveys with Will Thalheimer
The chapter of Thalheimer on the design of learners surveys is a star. With its in-depth experience, it presents the L-TEM model (an learning transfer assessment model) and sharing examples of practical questions for surveys that make these concepts simple and effective. This chapter is full of useful advice for anyone creating apprenticeship surveys.
Isolate the effects of the program by Jack Phillips and David Maddock
Chapter 13 dived deeply on how to determine if the results you see are really due to your learning program or influenced by other factors. This section is essential for any serious person about the valid assessment. It highlights techniques such as the analysis of trend lines, control groups and the use of estimates – my preferred method – to strengthen the validity of your data.
Storytelling in evaluation with Kevin Yates
The chapter of Kevin Yates on telling the story (page 265) sets up in the world of evaluation. He offers practical questions to help shape communication plans regarding the sharing of your results and your impact studies. The way he derives the narration with the data makes this chapter an invaluable resource to improve the way in which we present the results of the evaluation.
Build lasting measurement practices with Holly Burkett
The chapter of Holly Burkett really seized me by emphasizing ** the practice of sustainable measurement **. She explains how to align the learning measure with global business practices and organizational stakeholders to ensure that it is not only a unique project but a process in progress. The chapter encourages the use of different models and approaches according to the context.
Action planning as a measurement and transfer strategy (my chapter)
I was honored to contribute Chapter 10, focusing on action planning as a measurement and learning transfer strategy. Whether through tools like Coach M Or the interactions of the human team, the planning of the action is a solid basis to support measurement efforts. The book also includes large examples of dashboard to view this approach.
Packaging
It was a privilege to be part of this book alongside so many respected experts. The manual includes conversation extracts and case studies that show practical ways to monitor learning transfer and unlock precious data information.
