New Hanover County, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Board of Education voted against the IA security program and its $ 3.2 million grant.
In a 4-3 vote, the council voted against an amendment to make an dispatch audit, the company providing AI software.
The board of directors then voted on a request, made by Pat Bradford, to accept the subsidy of $ 3.2 million excluding any facial recognition feature as part of the software. In a 4-3 vote, the motion was not adopted.
The chairman of the board of directors, Melissa Mason, was the decisive vote in both cases. Mason says that she first liked the idea of the program but that she was not impressed by the town hall of Eviden on March 18.
“For me, it was the integrity of the company. It was accessibility to their information. I did not feel confident in their ability to provide the service they offered,” said Mason.
Mason says it will be the last time that the Board of Directors will discuss the AI pilot program.
