Nij has established volunteer artificial vest standards since 1972. The NIJ standard is the only standard accepted nationally for the articulation of the body carried by law enforcement agents and correctional services. Nij also has a requirement for inspection and monitoring test to ensure that the articulation vest of the body carried by the officers is safe and reliable. Each manufacturer of body deposits with a model that meets the standard is subject to six follow -up inspections and tests over a period of five years, consisting of:

• Inspections of vests recently manufactured to determine if they are built in the same way as the original samples.
• Subject ballistic test.

Tests in approved laboratories

The NIJ demands that the kid's models be tested for NIJ compliance to be tested in an approved laboratory. To be approved, a laboratory must:
