Nij has established volunteer artificial vest standards since 1972. The NIJ standard is the only standard accepted nationally for the articulation of the body carried by law enforcement agents and correctional services. Nij also administers a trade -available armor test program to comply with standards to determine if the vests meet the minimum NIJ performance standards.

The nij ballistic resistance standard classifies the bulletproof vest by ballistic performance levels. For any level of performance, the NIJ test protocol requires that the ball does not puncture the vest and that the vest protects against the blunt trauma.

Note that Nij has never tested or certified ballistic articles, such as backpacks, covers or cases of mistreatment, other than the articulation vest for the police. See the MJ declaration on complaints from the NIJ certification of ballistic backpacks.

The body armor of the body of the resistance to the stabbing of Nij specifies the minimum performance requirements so that the bullet-proof vest protected the torso from the oblique bars and the stabs of the knives and the tips; It also describes the associated test procedures. The standard includes three levels of performance, which are based on the capacity of the armor to prevent a perforation deep enough to injure the internal organs of an officer at different typing speeds. The standard also includes two protective classes: one for high quality knives and commercially products and another for smaller quality knife blades and improvised tips which are likely to be present in a correctional environment.

Compliance tests

Nij administers a trade -available armor test program to comply with standards to determine if the vests will work as expected.

In addition to being tested for NIJ compliance, body giletage models must meet the manufacturing and labeling requirements.

Nij also has a requirement for inspection and monitoring test to ensure that the articulation vest of the body carried by the officers is safe and reliable. Each manufacturer of body deposits with a model that meets the standard is subject to six follow -up inspections and tests over a period of five years, consisting of:

  • Inspections of vests recently manufactured to determine if they are built in the same way as the original samples.
  • Subject ballistic test.

The consortium of tests and evaluations of the NIJ criminal justice manages the compliance test program.

Tests in approved laboratories

The NIJ demands that the kid's models be tested for NIJ compliance to be tested in an approved laboratory. To be approved, a laboratory must:

  • Be accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Program Accreditation of the National Institute of Standards and Technology as General International Standards for Technical Competence and Management of Laboratory Quality, as well as to meet specific technical requirements to carry out the kid's tests included in NIJ standards. Learn more about The national voluntary laboratory accreditation program.
  • Be an independent and third-party laboratory and carry out all the compliance tests of body armor in the United States.
  • Demonstrate the freedom of conflicts of potential interests and maintain independent decision -making relations of its customers, affiliates, entrepreneurs and other organizations.
