Wilmington, NC (WECT)-Does artificial intelligence cause more harm than good in class? This is the big question of UNCW while AI reshapes the landscape of higher education.

On Thursday, the UNCW's board of directors heard a presentation of the offices of academic and student affairs on the way the university educates staff and students on AI practices.

“It is not a question if we are going to use AI, but it is certainly a question of how we are going to use AI,” said Dr. Carol McNulty, partner for educational affairs and undergraduate teachers.

The university describes its approach to the campus as a triple: collaborative, intentional and inclusive of all majors.

The UNCW already has teachers registered with initiatives aimed at advancing teaching and learning with AI.

For example, a program on the campus entitled Community of Practice has been active since the fall of 2025.

The course has 182 registrations in a canvas site for rhythm learning.

Some of the subjects discussed concern AI and the teacher-student relationship, AI and the classification / plagiarism, and academic integrity in the era of generative AI, according to a university presentation.

On Thursday, UNCW's staff said that some of the largest concerns about AI came to academic integrity.

Based on UNCW's data, the total number of violations of the Honor Code since 2020 and the tip of Covid has decreased.

In 2025-2024, the university reported 338 violations of the Honor Code. Among these, 41% were linked to AI.

In 2025-2025, 266 total violations were reported, 47% were linked to the AI.

In light of this, the president of the student body, Skylar Stein, said that the UNCW was doing the right thing by attacking the use of AI.

“I am super excited that the UNCW is at the forefront to ensure that we meet the AI where it is and we make sure that we are preparing for what the future of AI looks like,” he said.
