The Franklin Special District School Board heard a report on the approved use of artificial intelligence for the 2025-2026 school year at its regular meeting on Monday, June 9.

Dr. Mary Decker, associate director of schools for teaching and learning, has read the report, who said that the use of students in AI programs as a large language model like Chatgpt and Gemini is prohibited.

The Tennessee Board of Education requires that each school district submit an annual report detailing how the district plans to enforce the policy 4.214 or the use of artificial intelligence programs, said Decker.

The use of AI by students is limited to programs that include it as a functionality, not as a main function, said Decker. Canva for Education has been cited as an example, which allows students to create infographics and videos and includes AI as a tool to achieve this.

Decker said that district educational staff can use approved AI programs to complete their own work, including data analysis, communications writing and content development for educational or administrative purposes.

However, staff must comply with district policies and federal and federal confidentiality laws when using AI programs, she said.

“Employees must not place personally identifiable information, financial information, intellectual property or other confidential information in an AI system, even after the resource approval,” said Decker.

At the start of the school year, FSD educational technology specialists will present to the staff of each school on AI policy and how to request the APP AI District to use, Decker said.

Students will also receive instructions on academic integrity and when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use AI programs at the end of work, she said. Parents can consult the full list of approved programs to www.fssd.org.

Technology specialists use literacy lessons in non -profit common sense media to potentially integrate into AI policy, according to the report.
