Alpena – The fourth year students learned their way in the kitchen and participated in artistic projects in art in the loft as part of the loan, set, create! program.

Wednesday, instructing Jess Krawczak taught students of the fourth year of the Hinks primary school how to make a balanced and nutritious meal, featuring all the colors of the rainbow. The students then went to the art of the Loft class to finish an artistic project led by the instructor Mariah Brancheau.

“This is our update version of our flagship program, ready, define, create!” said Justin Christensen-Cooper, Art in the Executive Director of the Loft. “Ready, set, create!” Ended its 13th year of existence last year, and it was going well. It is partially funded by the military of young people from the county of Alpena and REC, which is a large part of our community, to make these programs for young people. And then we allow ourselves to give ourselves to our program. ”

Ready, define, create! is a four -week consecutive art instructions program that completes the fourth year program.

“It's completely free for teachers, for schools, for students,” said Christensen-Cooper. “In fact, we even provide transportation, supplies and all this too.”

He said that the program is a great way to introduce culinary and creative skills to students.

“We worked with Jess Krawczak, who, in a way, has become our internal chief for many of our children's lessons, and even our adult lessons,” said Christensen-Cooper. “While she was doing this, she built and grew up and created her own program, called Food is fuel. So she approached us and said:” Is there an opportunity in art in the loft to give life to this program? “Essentially, what he does is teach well-being and nutrition, pleasure in cooking, familiarity in the kitchen, be comfortable.”

He said that she and Branche had done an excellent job by teaching children.

“We were super energized on this subject,” said Christensen-Cooper. “We thought, what happens if we had associated it and associated it with the Ready, Set, Create program!” And created a larger program. “

He said Art In The Loft Board has had many program meetings and developed it, and met the Superintendent of Alpena public schools, Dave Rabbideau, to review logistics and program details.

“We sat with the superintendent and asked,” Is it even possible? ” Before we even try anything, ”said Christensen-Cooper. “And he was on board. He spoke with the teachers and met programs directors. ”

He said the loan, set, create! The program is intended for fourth year students, but other Alpena entities offer programs to students from other notes.

For example, the Alpena Plaza swimming pool offers the loan, set, swim! Program for second -year students and the National Marine Sanctuary of Thunder Bay offers educational programs to third year students at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena. Fifth year students participate in the Starbase program, learning science, technology, engineering and mathematics thanks to an exciting and practical program.

“Each level has a program, and it's so cool that we can be part of it,” said Christensen-Cooper.

He said that Art in the Loft had received funding through the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan to lead a Plête, Set, Create! Program for students from the All Saints Catholic School and the Home Partnership.

“We did it in a non-public school environment due to flexibility, and not to have to replace the program they had already planned,” said Christensen-Cooper. “With that, and these funds, we organized a just four -week food program that succeeds in food … We carried out, by test test, that we were able to manage this program for four consecutive weeks, with an hour for each class. So, they do an hour in the kitchen and an hour in class, all at the same time.”

Students prepare and eat their own nutritious lunch with each session.

“It's alive here,” said Christensen-Cooper. “We not only do visual arts … But now we are also associated with this nutritional and well-being part. They trust it, and they find success in a different way. ”

According to the art of the loft website, “Ready's mission, set Create! Is to meet the needs of the community for low -cost and free artistic programs for young people at the same time and outside the school. Art in the Loft Community Arts Center serves as a place for imagination, critical thinking and collaboration. ”.
