DUBOIS – The resident of Dubois Deb Mechling, during the meeting of the Dubois municipal council of this week, expressed his confusion on a recent decision of the council concerning a skills game company in the city center.

On December 5, 2025, the Dubois City Planning Commission sent a letter to the advice for a request for conditional use to open a skills game company at 333 W. Long Ave., said Mechling during the Public Comments of the Reunion.

“The owner of the proposed company had requested conditional use,” said Mechling. According to Zac Lawhead, responsible for the application of city codes, there were a certain number of restrictions that made this problematic, such as the size of the lot, the reversing requirements and no parking lot out of street. The decision was made by the planning commission to transfer the decision of the municipal council for parole due to the current disputes.

During the joint meeting of the consolidation council, the agenda included a vote on the request for conditional use at 333 W. Long Ave., said Mechling.

“During this meeting and also with the meeting of February 19, I spoke of the reaction of the public to so many skills game companies and the optics that it gives to our community,” said Mechling. “The members of our community were very vocal on the fact that the Council is more proactive with regard to skills game companies with regard to rules and policies instead of being reactive.”

At the meeting of March 19, Mechling said that municipal councilor Elliot Gelfand had made the request to reject the request for conditional use at 333 W. Long Ave., and municipal councilor James Aughenbaugh supported the motion and the council voted to refuse the request.

“I recently noticed that 331 W. Long Ave. that there was a new skills game company that recently opened,” said Mechling. “How can it be if the council voted against the 333 W. Long AV. Due to the restrictions of the place where it is, would these restrictions be the same thing with it next door? What is the status on operating rules for skills game companies? How much will be authorized?”

The co-management of the interim city, Ben Kafferlin, said: “I think it is fair to say that they (the company) are in violation. This address is in violation. It was noted, and at the moment we cannot say much because it is a subject of discussion with the solicitor. ”
