CEO of Duolingo: schools will exist in the future of AI, but just for childcare

What happens to schools if IA becomes a better teacher?

Luis Von AhnCEO of DuolingoRecently shared his vision of the future of education on the Podcast No Priors with Sarah Guo, venture capital, and he was centered on the AI ​​transforming the very role that schools will play.

“Education will change,” said Von Ahn. “It's just much more evolving to teach with AI than with teachers.”

This does not mean that teachers will disappear, he said. Instead, he thinks schools will stay, but their function could change spectacularly. In the opinion of Von Ahn, schools can increasingly serve as childcare services Supervised centers and environments, while AI manages most of the actual instruction.

“This does not mean that teachers will disappear. You always need people to take care of students,” said the CEO on the podcast. “I also don't think that schools will disappear because you still need child care.”

In a classroom of 30 students, only one teacher can find it difficult to offer personalized adaptive learning to each person. The AI, on the other hand, will be able to follow individual performance in real time and adjust the difficulty of the courses depending on how each student seizes the equipment, according to Von Ahn.

Imagine a classroom where each student is “Duolingo-Ing” through personalized content, while a teacher acts as a facilitator or a mentor. “You always need people to take care of the students,” he noted, “but the computer can know very precisely what you are good and bad-something that a teacher just can't follow for 30 students at the same time.”

Education is slow to change, so it can take many years, explained Von Ahn, noting that regulations, inherited systems and cultural expectations are used for trail. However, it sees a future where AI increases or even supplants parties of formal education, especially in countries that quickly need evolutionary education solutions.
