The Gibraltar Financial Intelligence Unit (GFIU) has launched a new online learning workshop on the fight against ransomware financing, now available on its digital apprenticeship platform, E -XXUS. The interactive and autonomous module aims to report entities, regulators and public sector professionals, helping them understand the flow of illicit funds from ransomware attacks and how to identify, detect and respond effectively.
The workshop is part of Project Nexus, the GFIU's strategic awareness and commitment program designed to strengthen Gibraltar's resilience to financial crime through knowledge sharing, training and collaboration. This launch is one of the wider efforts of the GFIU to provide accessible and high quality learning to its stakeholders.
Ransomware attacks continue to evolve into complexity, involving not only groups of organized crimes in search of financial gains, but also actors sponsored by the State using them for geopolitical disturbances. The growing sophistication of these threats underlines the importance of financial intelligence in the identification and the fight against the financing of these attacks.
Last year, the GFIU conducted a survey under the Gibraltar regulatory forum to assess the impact and prevalence of ransomware in Gibraltar. The information of this survey directly informed the development of the module, which includes the local context and meets the challenges faced by the organizations of the jurisdiction.
Despite being a small unit, the GFIU continues to balance the operational intelligence work with strategic initiatives like this.
GFIU director Edgar Lopez said: “I am very satisfied with my team's work in the delivery of this time workshop. In a rapid geopolitical and cyberlitic environment, our role is not only to respond to financial crime but to anticipate it. ”
“Project Nexus and E -XXus represent our commitment to prospective commitment and learning for finance center professionals.”
The Minister of Justice, Nigel Feetham, said: “I congratulate the GFIU for his continuous leadership in the fight against emerging threats like ransomware.”
“The development of this new online learning module reflects the dedication of the unit to proactive commitment and its commitment to support the partners of the public and private sector.”
The Ransomware funding module for counter-recompress is now live on E -XNUS and available for all authorized users. It is added to the growing list of platform workshops, which includes subjects such as suspicious activity reports, compromises on commercial emails, proliferation funding and terrorist financing.
