“Despite government policies supporting the transition to increased use of digital education, many educational establishments always use a more traditional approach centered on the teacher, which is not well aligned with digital education and skills required for industry and education 4.0”, explains Sasha Stubbs, responsible for the design of learning at RAMIT University Vietnam. UNESCO declares that teacher preparation varies considerably, especially in distant areas.
However, study programs are starting to fill this gap. For example, the baccalaureate technology program in education technology at the Hanoi University of Sciences and Technology is preparing teachers for digital learning environments. At RMIT University Vietnam, collaboration between educators is encouraged.
Next step: Bring AI to class
Major challenges remain in the education sector of Vietnam, in particular in rural areas, where access to infrastructure, digital equipment and qualified teachers is limited. That said, the Digital Education Revolution in Vietnam seems promising overall. According to a recent study, Vietnamese students who have access to digital tools have reached higher test scores than their peers without these resources. The country favors teacher training and tries to overcome regional and gender disparities. The next steps are already in the pipeline, in order to increase the use of AI: maybe one day soon, chatbots will tell Vietnamese students if their homework of mathematics are correct.
