Stephen Ferreira taught a group of women in a local informal settlement, how to transform food into bulk into small businesses.
Johannesburg, South Africa (May 24, 2025) – A constant burning subject in South Africa is the unemployment rate and as times become even more difficult, people need to innovate means to reach both ends. Stephen Ferreira de Charity begins with me found a simple way to help women from the local informal regulations, acquire skills in small businesses.
Stephen started ‘Charity starts with me“Shortly after, he was diagnosed for the first time with cancer in 2016. He realized that he could do much more with the life he had left and quickly set up the charity as a way to restore. He directed the charity throughout his chemotherapy treatments, his remission and, unfortunately, his relapse. Whatever the battles he faces in his own life, it is those of others who give him the strength to pass.
Working with the local community has become a large part of Stephen's life and ensuring that everyone has equal chances, all the more. Times are hard and he sees it from first hand, on the ground.
The only way to help (for the moment) was to offer the skills he has in terms of business and mathematics. Stephen obtained several bags of bulk food products, including rice, sugar and pap. He invited a group of ladies who are currently unemployed to pass for a course on how to divide the products in bulk in smaller and more affordable packages and sell them to profit so that they can also put food on their tables.
He shared his new Facebook initiative in the hope that people could provide bulk items for his small classes.
“With many women in informal establishments who have no work and unable to find jobs, we have decided to take matters into their own hands.
This morning, we had a workshop on what it takes to manage a business. How to buy in bulk, recondition and sell food for profit. Starting with the most on demand products – corn, rice and sugar.
Most SPAZA stores only sell larger 1 kg / 2 kg packs and, unfortunately, this is not always awkward for low or no income families.
We have set the cost per bag, the best price requested compared to small spaza stores in the region and how many benefits they will make.
All the ladies have had an equal chance to participate in this initiative and I will continue to advise and support those who can make it work.
If you wish to support this project and make a contribution, please contact us. Currently, we can use rice, corn and sugar to help start everyone and increase their profits a little so that they can extend their businesses. »»
Stephen hopes to continue their training, so if you can help yourself, you can find its contact details here. If you want to help other ways, there is still a need for the Winter jacket and jersey player. Or using his contact details related to a few sentences, he can advise which projects currently need support.
