MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing received substantial support for its new headquarters striking on rue Vassar in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A major gift from Sebastian Man '79, SM '80 will be recognized with the name of a key space in the building, enriching academic and research activities of the Schwarzman College of Computing and MIT.
Man, the first major adult to support the building since the fundamental gift of Stephen A. Schwarzman created the Schwarzman College of Computing, is the president and CEO of Chung Mei International Holdings Ltd., a manufacturer of kitchen and air treatment products for major international brands. Particularly favorable to education, he is a member of the Council of the University of Sciences and Technologies of Hong Kong, headquarters to the Board of Directors of the Morningside College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was a member of the Court of the University of Hong Kong and president of the Harvard Business School Association of Hong Kong. Its community activities include the member service of the Better Kong Foundation council and member of the Executive Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong China Business Council, as well as many other civic and commercial organizations. The man is also part of the community of MIT parents because his son, Brandon Man, is a student graduated from the mechanical engineering department.
The gift of the man in college was recognized during a ceremony and a lunch in Hong Kong, where he resides on January 10. Mit Chancellor for Academic Advance W. Eric L. Grimson Phd '80, who welcomed the event, noted that in addition to his financial generosity at the Institute, the man played many important voluntary roles at MIT. “His service includes the progress of the MIT near and far as a member of the Companies Development Committee, sharing his expertise through his recent selection as a new member of the Mechanical Engineering Committee and, more recently, of his acceptance of an invitation to join the Advisory Council of Schwarzman College of Computing Dean,” he said.
“This new building is a home for the MIT community and a house for people who help shape the future of computer science and AI,” said MIT Schwarzman College of Computing Dean Daniel Huttenloche SM '84, Phd '88 in a video welcoming man and his family. “Thanks to your gift, the college is better placed to achieve its mission to create a positive impact on society, and for that, we are deeply grateful.”
The state of technology Mit Schwarzman College of Computing Headquarters was designed to reflect the mission of meeting rapid development needs in IT thanks to new approaches to real world research, education and commitment. The space offers the campus of MIT a attachment base to calculate research groups, new classrooms and competition and event spaces.
Those of the Hong Kong event also took advantage of a video message from Stephen A. Schwarzman, president, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone and founding donor of the college. “When we announced for the first time the new MIT college,” he said, “MIT said that he reshaped for the future. This future has come even faster than we thought. Today, AI is part of the daily vernacular, and the ability of MIT to have an impact on its support with your support is more tangible than ever.”
Sébastien spoke with emotion of his years at the Institute. “The place really opened my eyes … and sharpened my intellect. He gave me a new world, brand new. Everything was interesting and everything was exciting!
“I come from a family where my father taught us that we should always be grateful to these people and places who helped you become who you are today,” continued the man. “The MIT instilled me endless intellectual curiosity and love for the unknown, and I am honored and privileged to be associated with MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.”
