Once a year, I teach a course to the aspiring scientists of the data. At the start of first class, I ask my students what they hope to learn. Often, their answers are “analyzing the data” or “building good models”. Compare these responses to the workshops that I perform with scientists of data by practicing that speak in different terms when they discuss what they do. They call it “solving problems” – a step in the right direction – but even it is too narrow.
