ST. Paul – How should students and staff use artificial intelligence (AI) in class? This is a question that St. Paul Education hopes to answer as it develops guiding principles concerning the use of AI in its schools.

On April 9, the board of directors of St. Paul Education approved the administration to probe students and parents from their point of view with regard to the effective use of AI.

Artificial intelligence, like generative AI, is already common in society, has recognized Peter Barron, superintendent at St. Paul Education. “It's everywhere. It is omnipresent, “he said, even in schools and classrooms.

“We know that students use AI … So we want to provide them with advice on our IA expectations and what it looks like,” he said.

But to do it, you need transparency. “We have a responsibility, I believe, to help students to be transparent about their use of AI rather than something they want to hide,” he said.

“So let's talk about it. Let's go out in the open air,” said Barron.

When asked if he thought that AI offers more danger than benefits, Barron said he thought that the advantages prevail over the disadvantages – since the user understands what he is doing.

“There are potential dangers … potential improper use … But we want to be simple with students in terms of (they are) using AI,” he said.

Barron also thinks that there could be opportunities to use AI in a creative way for educational purposes. He said that St. Paul Education's innovative consultant is working with staff on how they can effectively use AI.

“So what we are looking at is to have policies in place,” he said.
