Teach the primary

Teach Primary is a free class observation tool that provides a window on one of the least explored and most important aspects of the education of a child: what happens in class. The tool is intended to be used in primary classrooms (classes 1 to 6) and has been designed to help countries collect data on teaching practices to improve the quality of education following the Teach Main framework. Teach is also available for educational contexts of early childhood through TEach ECE and for secondary classrooms through Teach Secondary.

  • Teach Primary comes with A series of resources To support its use. These are intended to provide support at each stage of the implementation of the tool, including initial conversations with relevant stakeholders, training of observers, the use of the tool to collect data in the field, cleaning and analysis of data and production and sharing results.
  • Teach Primary And its additional resource toolbox is free.

Teach The primary has undergone a rigorous development and validation process over a period of two years to ensure that the tool captures the teaching practices associated with student learning and that it met the appropriate psychometric criteria of reliability and validity. After the initial development and validation process, Teach The primary was launched in 2019.

Since then, more than 500 enumerators in more than 30 countries have been trained on the tool. More than 92% of all enumerators trained have exceeded the Teach Primary certification examination. Other analyzes have shown that less than 6.2% of the variation of Teach Primary scores are due to the effects of enumerators. The high reliability of the tool can be credited with structured training equipment, intense and practical training and the use of local videos to train local observers.

What is Teach Primary measure?

Teach Primary Capture:

THE Teach Primary framework

Teach the primary framework

As part of Time component on the taskthree instantaneous From 1 to 10 seconds are used to record both the teacher's actions and the number of students who are in the task throughout the observation.

THE Component of the quality of teaching practices is organized in three main areas: class culture, teaching and socio-emotional skills. These areas have nine corresponding elements which point to around twenty-eight behaviors. The behaviors are characterized as weak, medium or high, on the basis of the evidence collected during the observation. These behavior scores are translated into a 5 -point scale which quantifies the education practices captured in a series of two 15 -minute course observations.

  • Class culture: The teacher creates a culture conducive to learning. The objective here is not on the teacher's correction of the negative behaviors of the students, but rather the extent to which the teacher creates a favorable learning environment and sets Positive behavioral expectations.
  • Instruction: The teacher teaches in a way that deepens students' understanding and encourages critical thinking and analysis. The emphasis here is not on teaching methods specific to content, but rather the extent to which the teacher Facilitates the lesson,, Check understandingprovides backand encourages students to Think critically.

Teach Primary 1st (2019) and 2ND (2021) edition

In 2020 and 2021, Teach The primary has undergone a revision process to strengthen how the tool has measured inclusive teaching practices. Inclusive teaching practices are defined as those who create increased opportunities For all children To access learning. The vision of inclusion in Teach is anchored in the Universal Design for Learning framework (UDL) and considers additional inclusion dimensions, including the physical environment. The second edition of Teach The primary (2021) reflects some important adjustments of the original version published in 2019.
